THE DARK KNIGHT is sensational. First Heath Ledger passes away and a lot of people thought the film was doomed. It has passed up STAR WARS. It's nearing a domestic box-office take of $500 Million! There is much speculation of an Oscar for the late Mr. Ledger. This film just continues to please the pundits and wow the audiences. It has smashed many records and is number two behind the lofty Titanic. But there is the spectre of Heath Ledger who manages to steal the movie in true Joker fashion. Tragedy helped spur this movie to become a Hollywood phenomenon and that's the sad part, really. Ledger touched greatness and then he died. At first I was put off by plain looking Chicago as the backdrop. But I think the Nolans did this on purpose. It's as if they are saying this isn't really Gotham. In fact,it's anywhere,USA! Batman has his hands full with Bat wannabes and the mob. Along comes a stranger with clown make-up but there is nothing funny about this clown. This clown is psychotic. Someone says "You are crazy!" The Joker only replies with a glare "No. I am not." When Joker captures a vigilante he roars LOOK AT ME! and then tortures and kills the poor bastard. A hip gangsta pays the price for mouthing off to The Joker who declares "LET'S PUT A SMILE ON THAT FACE!" Batman tries to figure out just what makes this guy tick but Alfred tells him that "Some men just want to watch the world burn!" This Joker is no ass_clown like in 1989's Batman. This one is funny and chilling and downright nasty. He doesn't hesitate to throw a woman out a window! He kills a Judge and tries to take out the Mayor too! He robs the mob of 64 Million Dollars and shrugs it off. "You think you can just rob us and then walk away?" asks a mobster. The Joker glibly replies "Yeah." Funny stuff right? I love when he chides the mob. "What's the matter? Did your balls fall off?" And blowing up a hospital is just business for this guy. Or maybe it's how he gets his kicks. Burning the mob's money, blowing up a police convoy! "In the end," says The Joker, "Everything burns!" At one point in the movie, Batman resorts to spying on all of Gotham to home in on The Joker(ala Bush)much to the dismay of Lucius Fox. There's a rousing climax in a glass tower as Joker tries to end The Bat. And there are subplots and twists in a teriffic script by the Nolan Brothers. The direction is taut with a lot of tense scenes. The music builds as The Joker's ire rises. In one scene Batman beats Joker to a pulp. The Joker spits blood and laughs in his face! People have drawn comparisons of this movie to DIRTY HARRY and THE UNTOUCHABLES. The Dark Knight is a wild ride and Heath Ledger just adds to the fun. This was supposed to "a Batman movie" but Ledger steals the movie with his masterful performance. It's a ride through The Joker's Funhouse and we are his guests. Sad to say but true. Ledger propelled this movie to the greatness it has achieved.

Nailed the review, Monica! Even bit players - like the con and the business man on the ferries have to make choices - and those choices might be different from what you think you'd do if you were in that situation. Superbly well made movie.
