People are jerks and Keene portrays the collapse of society: eat or be eaten. Lots of the rape scenes are a bit too much, but it just adds to the element of collapse. I don't think it's fair to judge the whole book based on that. I thought the concept was really good and it was a good old zombie book, way better than Dead Sea, in my opinion. There are few things that push my throw-the-book-across-the-room buttons like poorly handled rape. It sounds like Keene was struggling toward social commentary and just didn't quite make it there--or, if he did, he made it for an audience that just doesn't include me. I got about 2/3rds of the way through, and gave up. I found it to be a total let-down, after all the hype it'd received. Had a very 'Emperor's New Clothes' reaction to it. I don't even remember the rape scenes. Maybe they happened after I stopped reading it. I was curious why Keene had to include a zombie baby every few chapters in the initial stages of the book.
