Review of The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle

The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle

Fen Inkwright is a folklorist and illustrator who has designed The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle, a deck of sixty, copper-foil embossed cards inspired by fantasy myths and legends drawn from novels and tabletop roleplaying games.

The deck’s description reads: “Each of the 60 cards in this deck represents a person living within the Citadel. The guidebook describes different scenes that the reader will encounter while travelling through the city, including the stories of each character and the interpretation of each card.”

The Citadel is a truly unique oracle deck. The hexagonally-shaped cards are thematic and the linework is clear and sharp. Separated into four suits marked by the alchemical symbols for fire, air, earth, and water, each card has an upright and reversed meaning. The book outlines multiple uses for this deck. It offers multiple card spreads, instructions to complement tarot readings, and advice to build TTRPG characters and encounters.

What makes this deck a “must buy” for me is the quality. The deck box is fully illustrated and has a magnetic lid; the cards and fully-illustrated book are housed inside an interior box that’s also filled with art. Unique, beautifully-designed, well-written and filled with insight, if you’re looking for a multi-purpose oracle deck, I highly recommend The Citadel.

This deck is available at bookstores and at online retailers like Amazon.com.
