Awaiting Universal’s DRACULA UNTOLD with Bated Breath

Posted on September 9, 2014 by Monica Valentinelli

Slated for an October 10th release in the U.S., Universal’s DRACULA UNTOLD returns to Bram Stoker’s story in an action-filled, heart-wrenching way. For many reasons, I’m excited about this film on a personal level both as a writer and a fan of all things vampire. It’s no secret I’ve been disappointed with the blurry way we’ve treated vampires in paranormal romance in the last decade or so, with romance being more prevalent than the monster. I’m of the belief that we need monsters–badly–and I’m frightened with the possibility that we relate to them just a little too much, that we forget that they’ve turned to darkness. Of course, the opposite is true–I’m a sucker for a good story and Bram Stoker’s Dracula is exemplary in that regard.

Now, what I know about DRACULA UNTOLD equates to what’s shown in this trailer below. I know that it’s a reboot of Universal Movies classic monsters and that it stars the talented Luke Evans. (The trailer music is pretty awesome…thanks to the fine folks at Dracula Untold for revealing the artist to be New Zealand artist Lorde. The song is called “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”) Other than the fact that it’s inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula and it endeavors to fill the void left behind by Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula (1992)? I can only speculate based on my impressions here. What I feel, however, is that this film has great potential to bring back the vampire genre. What makes a man do terrible things? To turn to darkness? Clearly, the character motivation shown here is something we can relate to. But does that make him any less a monster? Or will we finally quiver with fear as Dracula bares his fangs once more?

I guess we’ll find out! Watch for my review after seeing DRACULA UNTOLD in theatres.
